Jamie’s Italian, The Oracle, Reading.
Fail. I managed to persuade the waitress to take the order, but she failed to persuade the chef to make one. “If we weren’t so busy then he would have”. Shame, because I tried some of their ‘funky chips’ and I had a burger for my main course so I know they could have served up a really great chip butty.

1/10 (1 point for not rejecting the idea completely)

The Snug Bar, Godlaming
A nice one this but it could so easily have been better. Lovely chips and tasty bread, no quibbles about ordering off menu and proper Heinz ketchup in bottles. Just a shame that they went and char-grilled the bread. This they did well enough - not too burnt - but for me a chip butty needs contrast between soft fluffy bread and crispy crunchy chips.
6/10 (No idea how much it cost as this was a ‘free lunch’ - there is of course no such thing)

Pretty nice this one. Pre-ordered by email with no fuss, but it came in kit form. The bread and the chips were both very nice, though the chips were a touch over-seasoned for my taste (but not so much that I didn’t scoff the ones that didn’t fit in the sarnie).

Sportsman’s Bar, Regent Park, Morecambe

No pic I’m afraid - I plead distraction by my three year old daughter and the imminent start of the grand prix.

Not a great one this. A generous portion of mediocre chips, and some ok bread and butter. Sauce was in a sachet. Ordering wasn’t completely off the menu as both chips and bread and butter were listed as sides and construction was DIY.

I had some great value meals here but this wasn’t one of them, despite the decent price.

Bay Tree Cafe, Godalming

A really nice one this. Nice chips, lovely bread and proper ketchup. Let down slightly by the fact that the bread was cut too thinly to comfortably hold the generous portion of chips.

I didn’t order, but I’m told it was no problem going of menu once the waitress was convinced that chips inside two bits of bread was something we eat in these parts. As my boss generously covered lunch I’ve no idea what it cost.

Leathern Bottle, Farncombe
No problem ordering a chip butty here, beyond the usual surliness of the bar staff. Pretty standard butty - with cheap bread and mediocre chips. Proper Heinz Ketchup couldn’t rescue it.
Fairly cheap though.

Cafe at Broadwater Golf Course, Farncombe - again
Slightly nicer in a baguette (they were out of baps), Although a bit smaller. Still poor quality ketchup so its’s not getting a higher score.

Farnborough Town FC

No picture of this one as my phone wasn’t playing nice, and frankly I felt a bit of a tit sitting in the Prospect Road Stand taking a picture of my half time snack.

My request for a chip butty (off the menu) was met with confusion as to what to charge but friendly approval of my wise choice of sustenance. Hard to judge the quality accurately as it was a cold night and so the butty was cold before I could tuck in. Good chips, ok bread and decent ketchup - no butter though.

Cafe at Broadwater Golf Course, Farncombe
Lovely chips, and plenty of them too. Friendly staff, and no hesitation about making a chip butty that wasn’t on the menu. The soft white roll wasn’t bad but a bit too much flour all over it and spread with marge not butter. Ketchup was in a Heinz bottle but it tasted like cheap red sauce.
